SSL Certificate installation and activation

Good. You’ve made the right decision to bring your website to the next level. Do check out the previous article pertaining SSL Certificate and where you can purchase it. After purchasing the SSL certificate, you are required to generate CSR and then proceed to do the activation and installation of the SSL Certificate. Note: This guide is meant for Web Hosting services that comes with cPanel. Check with your respective Hosting Provider for detail. Depending on the Certificate Authority (CA) where you purchased the SSL certificate from, some may require you to provide the Certificate Signing Request (CSR) code during the purchase of the SSL Certificate.

To generate the CSR code

  • Login to cPanel. The default URL is (This URL is an example only)
  • Scroll down to Security then locate SSL/TLS Manager
  • Choose Certificates (CSR) and click “Generate, view, upload or delete SSL Certificates
  • Fill in the detail under Generate a New Certificate Signing Request
  • Key: Generate a new 2,048 bit key
  • Domain: Enter the domain name that you would like to generate the SSL certificate
  • City: (Enter your city)
  • State: (Enter your state)
  • Choose the Country: (Enter your country)
  • Company: (Optional)
  • Company Division: (Optional)
  • Email: (Important: Enter a valid email for verification)
  • Passphrase: Leave blank
  • Description: Leave blank
  • Click on Generate

Your key will look something like this:

CSR Code

  • Copy the code and paste on to a notepad. Important: Do not attempt to change any thing in the code as it is CASE SENSITIVE

To activate the SSL Certificate

  • Login to the respective Certificate Authority (CA) member portal
  • Click Activate SSL Certificate
  • Paste the CSR code and choose the web server type: Apache, Nginx, cPanel or other
  • Choose verification method: Email (Recommended as it’s easier. Important: DO NOT use Gmail. For ownership verification purpose, the email address has to be associated with your domain e.g, or
  • Fill in your particulars
  • Make sure all the particular is correct and submit

Download SSL Certificate

At this point, you should receive an email from the Certificate Authority or Hosting Provider for verification. Follow the instructions in the email and go through the verification process. Next, you will receive another email to download the certificate. Follow the instruction and download the SSL Certificate that ends with *.crt to your computer.

SSL Certificate Installation

Finally, this is the final step you need to do.

  • Login to cPanel. The default URL is (This URL is an example only)
  • Scroll down to Security then locate SSL/TLS Manager
  • Select “Certificates (CRT): Generate, view, upload or delete SSL Certificates
  • Under “Upload a new Certificate” click Browse button
  • Locate the SSL certificate on your computer where you saved the SSL Certificate
  • Click Upload Certificate
  • After uploading the certificate on to the server, it should show up in the list of Certificates on Server
  • Select the appropriate SSL Certificate and click Install
  • Go back to SSL/TLS Manager and click Manage SSL Sites
  • A summary of the SSL Certificate will show up under Manage Installed SSL Websites
  • Click Install Certificate button

Voila. The SSL Certificate Installation is done. Now, you need to login to your WordPress Settings > General and change the default URL from http://www.yourdomain to You may encounter an exclamation mark on the padlock of your URL.

SSL Connection error

This problem occurs due to some of the links and images on your website are not pointed to https. You have to change all the links manually in this case.
